Jazz Masterclasses

Two inspirational workshop days for students who will be tutored by two leading jazz musicians from the Royal Academy of Music Jazz Department. Nick Smart and Nikki Isles will direct two coaching sessions:
Morning for beginners at grade 3+ and afternoon for grade 5+.

The Dave Gordon Trio - Jazz concert

The trio consists of pianist David Gordon, double bassist Ole Rasmussen and drummer Paul Cavaciuti. Together they have a readily identifiable sound and their music combines accessibility and groove with cutting edge improvisation, reflecting the group's diverse backgrounds.

Pro Arte Piano Quartet

The quartet was formed in 1989 by members of the world-famous Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble and comprises Kenneth Sillito violin, Robert Smissen viola, Stephen Orton cello, and Hamish Milne piano. The quartet has toured all over Europe, as well as the USA, Canada, Australia, and the Far East. They have recorded for Chandos Records and the BBC, and have appeared at many major festivals with their very varied repertoire - from lesser known quartets by Goetz and Copland to familiar masterpieces by Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak and Schumann. Their programme is the Adagio and Rondo Concertante by Schubert, Piano Quartet in E by Goetz, and the Piano quartet in E flat by Schumann.

Waka Hasegawa & Joseph Tong - Piano duets and two pianos

We are delighted to welcome Joseph and Waka for their second appearance at The Old Granary. They are widely regarded as one of Britain's most exciting young piano duos and are in demand for concerts both in the UK and also abroad. Since winning major prizes in 2003 in Tokyo and the Czech Republic, they regularly appear at many concert halls including prestigious London venues such as the Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall and Fairfield Hall, Croydon.

Their programme includes duos and duets by Schubert, Debussy, York Bowen, Arensky's 2 piano Suite No 1 and a work especially commissioned for them, this year, by Nicola LeFanu.

John Lill, CBE - Piano

Britain's well known pianist John Lill has recently celebrated his 60th birthday with a series of concerts throughout the UK. He first came to international attention when he won the coveted Tchaikovsky award in Moscow in 1970. Known for his aristocratic interpretations of Beethoven and the great masters of the nineteenth and twentieth century piano repertoire, John Lill performs all over the world and was awarded a CBE in the 2005 New Year's Honours List. His programme will include works by Haydn, Schumann, Chopin and Beethoven’s - 'Waldstein' Sonata.

Members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra directed by David Juritz
Resident at the Marina Theatre, Lowestoft

The RPO have made a tremendous impact in the locality with their current residency at Lowestoft leading to many concerts being quickly sold out. By special arrangement we are very proud to include this chamber concert of 13 members. The string ensemble will perform prominent chamber works including:

Bach - Double Violin Concerto
Vivaldi - The Seasons: Summer
Elgar - Serenade for Strings
Grieg - Holberg Suite

This year the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra proudly celebrates its sixtieth anniversary. Founded in 1946 by Sir Thomas Beecham, with his vision of bringing world-class performances of the greatest music to the length of the country, the Orchestra continues to maintain Beecham's legacy by offering audiences in the UK and abroad the highest possible standards of music-making, accompanied by some of the most acclaimed artists of the day. The Orchestra has been directed by some of the world's finest conductors, most notably Rudolf Kempe, Antal Dorati, André Previn and Vladimir Ashkenazy. The RPO continues to thrive, undertaking a busy concert, touring and recording schedule, under the inspired leadership of Maestro Daniele Gatti.

Mark Ashford - Guitar
David Pollock - Harpsichord

Mark graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 1993 with first class Honours and the Julian Bream Guitar prize. He maintains a busy career and on April 7th performs with the RPO in the Rodrigo Guitar Concerto at the Marina Theatre. Mark is head of guitar at Birmingham Conservatoire of Music and in 2003 was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. For tonight's concert he is joined by harpsichordist David Pollock who has achieved considerable recognition as accompanist, solo recitalist and continuo player. David has performed to critical acclaim both in Britain and abroad. Their programme will include works by Boccherini, Rodrigo and Vivaldi’s Concerto in D.

After last years 'sell out' concert by jazz guitar legend Martin Taylor we are so pleased to secure another concert with Martin and a guest artist. Described as "THE acoustic guitarist of his generation" by America's Acoustic Guitar Magazine, Martin Taylor has established a unique career as an internationally acclaimed guitarist, and his inimitable style has seen him recognized as the world's foremost exponent of solo jazz guitar playing.

Chopin: His Life & Times

Jack explores the life and music of Chopin in words and music. He will include fascinating anecdotes from the composer’s life in Warsaw and Paris, supplemented by performances of favorite Waltzes, Nocturnes, Studies, Preludes and Polonaises.

Gershwin & friends

After last years highly successful Gershwin concert, we are pleased to offer a second opportunity to present another Gershwin programme. Jack performs a selection of his own transcriptions of Gershwin show-tune improvisations, with the inclusion of other composers such as Debussy and Gibbons. The recital will finish with Rhapsody In Blue.

Melvyn Tan has distinguished himself as a highly versatile keyboard artist establishing a formidable world-wide reputation. His performances range from Mozart to Messiaen and his most recent recording of Debussy's Preludes has received critical acclaim. His programme will include Albeniz, Scarlatti and the Beethoven Sonata Appassionata Op 57.

Marianne Olyver and Her Orchestra

Established in 1991, Marianne Olyver and her Orchestra is a unique 5 piece ensemble of virtuoso dash and sparkle. The orchestra has gripped the publics' attention with its stunning ability to bring back to life the fondly remembered music of a bygone era. This year the Orchestra will be playing for International Festivals and Music Societies both here and abroad and Marianne has just returned from an extensive recital tour of the Far East. Marianne Olyver and her Orchestra regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 2 (Richard Baker’s Melodies for You, Friday Night is Music Night, Desmond Carrington All Time Greats), BBC Radio 3 (In Tune, Brian Kay's Light Programme) and on Classic FM.
