Rick Wakeman with his Acoustic Rock Style Ensemble

Tickets £25

Oliver Wakeman
- piano
with
Dave Colquhoun - acoustic guitars
Ashley Holt - vocals
Tony Fernandez - percussion

This concert is a new addition due to the unforeseen cancellation at Crystal Palace on June 23rd.
It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to include in the concert series, as the artists rarely perform together, and just happen to be in Norfolk... This will be one of two appearances by Rick who maintains his solo concert at the end of the season

This will be a very unique evening in many respects. Rick has never ever done an unplugged before with a band and also this will be the first time that his son Oliver and he will have
performed an entire concert together.

The music will include many surprises and will bear no resemblance whatsoever to the rock show that he does with The English Rock Ensemble. It is also unlikely ever to be repeated so
certainly one not to miss. As well as the music from Rick and the band, there will be solo spots from both Oliver and Dave Colquhoun.

Another first will be a questions and answers where questions can be asked not only to Rick but to any of the guys on stage. (Rick is extremely nervous about letting them anywhere near a microphone, but nevertheless has succumbed) !!!

Ashley Holt was one of the original members and album performers from 1974

It’s going to be a very special occasion!

The 'Classic' English Rock Ensemble was first formed in 1974 to perform with Rick for 'The Journey to the Centre of the Earth' concert at the Royal Festival Hall. It has had a few personnel changes throughout the years, but the current line up has pretty much been together for more than ten years and is considered by “Wakeman Connoisseurs” to be far and away the finest

They play a limited amount of shows each year both at home and abroad and mainly festivals. This year there will only be four performances worldwide. Their last performance in this country was at the Cropredy Festival three years ago where they received a standing ovation and amazing reviews

“Kempf has the maturity and musicality with which to harness his gifts to artistic ends. He has the fearless exuberance ofyouth. He is prepared to take risks, a readiness that brings spontaneous combustion to his playing; but he has sensitivity, too” The Telegraph

Freddy Kempf is one of today’s most successful pianists, performing to sell-out audiences all over the world. Exceptionally gifted with an unusually broad repertoire, Freddy has built a unique reputation as an explosive and physical performer not afraid to take risks as well as a serious, sensitive and profoundly musical artist.

Born in London in 1977, Freddy made his concerto debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 8, and, maintaining a strong link with the orchestra ever since, joined them for his conducting debut in 2011. "A brilliant British duo.......no praise could be high enough........ brilliantly fleet and entertaining.......performed with infectious verve and spirit" Music & Musicians

"........a volume and scale of expression comparable to that of an orchestra" The Times

NETTLE & MARKHAM rank amongst the world’s foremost piano duos.  For 35 years their vitality, enthusiasm, musical integrity and remarkable ensemble have been delighting audiences throughout the musical world and they are considered one of the most entertaining and musically satisfying partnerships performing today.

David Nettle & Richard Markham’s collaboration proved successful from the start - within four years they had performed on as many continents in a range of concert, festival, radio and TV appearances. Their unconventional London debut in 1982 at the Wigmore Hall was an “all-Grainger” centenary recital; wide-ranging repertoire and innovative programming have become hallmarks of their work ever since both in the concert hall and recording studio. They have also performed anniversary tributes to Stravinsky and Saint-Saëns, given the UK and Asian premières of the rediscovered Bruch Double Concerto and were the first duo to give performances of Holst's own two-piano version of The Planets in modern times; their subsequent recording of this 'tour de force' won a British MRA Award for Excellence. An eclectic range of compositions for one piano/four hands and two pianos has been written for them over the years, as well as a new two-piano concerto commissioned for their 30th anniversary. In addition they regularly champion less familiar or neglected compositions. Three television documentaries have been made about their work.

Nettle & Markham are Steinway Artists. They also own and occasionally perform on a very rare, magnificent full-size Pleyel Double Piano of 1928 (recently restored by Andrew Giller) which, along with their own Steinway pianos, is housed in their unusual studio -  a converted Victorian railway arch which has been featured in a BBC “Modern Times” documentary and in the “Guardian” magazine.

'That boy seems to have a sonic variety of liquid gold in his fingers. He's a natural romantic, sensing exactly how to shape an ecstatic arc and pace a rubato.' The Independent, 2011

‘The first thing you notice is the limpid surface of Grosvenor’s playing, the warm tonal gleam that he conjures up from the keys. It is a beautiful sound, and beneath it there are seams of passion, discretion and emotional affinity with the music... there is little to quibble with in this recital, which shows intelligence coupled with a command of keyboard colour and musical characterisation that are remarkable.’ The Telegraph, 2011

Nineteen year old British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor is internationally recognized for his electrifying performances and penetrating interpretations. An exquisite technique and ingenious flair for tonal colour are the hallmarks which make Benjamin Grosvenor one of the most sought-after young pianists in the world. His virtuosic command over the most strenuous technical complexities never compromises the formidable depth and intelligence of his interpretations. Described by some as a ‘Golden Age’ pianist (American Record Guide) and one ‘almost from another age’ (The Times), Benjamin is renowned for his distinctive sound, described as ‘poetic and gently ironic, brilliant yet clear-minded, intelligent but not without humour, all translated through a beautifully clear and singing touch’ (The Independent).
